Baby Teeth Care Tips
Brushing, Flossing, and Cleaning
Like adult teeth, baby teeth and children’s teeth must be cared for by keeping a consistent daily oral routine. For baby teeth, clean their teeth and mouth for them twice a day. Before any teeth appear in your baby’s mouth, it is still important to clean their mouth and gums by wiping with thoroughly with a damp washcloth or with gauze.
Young children learn from their parents and pick up on their dental care habits to incorporate into their own lives. Encourage and brush your teeth with your children in the mornings before school and in the evenings before bedtime. Make sure you and your child are both using soft bristled toothbrushes. Teach your children how to brush and floss their teeth correctly.
Fluoride Usage
Fluoride is a natural and safe mineral that helps prevent cavities by protecting the enamel of your teeth. Fluoride is already in most municipal drinking water but you can also get fluoride at your dental checkups where your dentist will apply a gel on your teeth. Both children and adults will benefit from this topical fluoride treatment.
Food and Drink Choices
Diet is also very important to young teeth. Snacking often on sugary foods and drinks can leave a residue on your child’s teeth that will not be removed until they brush their teeth next. Encourage your child to eat a mix of healthy snacks during the day. Reduce the amount of juice your child drinks as sugary drinks can contribute to cavities.
Dental Checkups and Cleanings
Make sure your child goes to regular dental checkups with your dentist. We recommend making a dentist appointment every 6 months. At these checkups and cleaning appointments, with Dr. Laura Kearney, we provide you with useful information about maintaining your oral health to reduce any serious dental issues from occurring in the future.
